Choice

Choice

Choice to me means the privilege of freedom and understanding the consequences of each decision I make whether it be good or bad. I have made the bad choice of not excelling in the beginning of my school year making it hard for me to relax in my senior year. Choices that I have made sometimes bother me long after they have been dealt with such as money I've lost, people I've hurt, and unaccomplished goals. Not to have a choice is like not living, not being able to attack all problems from different angles, not being able to choose right from wrong would make life plain because the power to say yes or no isn't Mine. I believe that choice makes life worth living because I myself took that road and have no one criticize but myself.

In Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken" choice is important. In "The Road Not Taken" the traveler has to choose between two roads to continue his journey, the author uses this to explain that making the right choice can determine the outcome of life, even the outcome of the day. The traveler's choice was the path that wasn't taken by many others, the path he chose was the right one. The deeper meaning is that when determining which way he wants to go in life choosing the same path that many others have, he wont end where he wants to be. Choosing a different path will give him a great outcome in terms of what he wanted that outcome to be.

In Rudolfo Anaya's "Dead End" choice is important. In the story "Dead End" Maria lives a life of hardship, dealing with school, the loss of her mother and her father not being around and watching over her siblings. Her choice would have determined the outcome of her life and her families, if she were to have chosen to be like the other girls and go with Frankie breaking her promise to her mother, she would have probably lost her brother and sister not got an education and ended up pregnant. Her mother's words affected her judgement and in the end her choice allowed her to stray from the negative and continue on with her success.

In Barry Schwartz's "Tyranny Of Choice" choice is important. To the point where regret and depression begin to take over, I believe that having a variety of choices is great but I also understand that when I make my choice later on I will dwell on the thought of a better one. Barry Schwartz understood completely what people go through being rich or poor does not matter, what matters is how much energy I put into what I want. Choice is not bent on needs or what comes natural, it is based on wants, expectations and self-satisfaction. Our happiness is determined by what we picture it to be and if my ultimate choice turns out to be nothing of what I pictured, the depression takes over and the regret of a different choice leaves me unstable. Choice determines everything, our future, our health and even our emotion, so it's important that I realize am I a maximizer or a satisficer?

This cartoon is a good example of choice because it explains the events that occur when coming to a decision and we see things that effect our choice. A negative comment on a great puppy, which could have been the best one for me but instead I choose the other which ultimately wasn't the right one for Me. Many things effect choice and makes the people who make the wrong choice regret it.

Choice plays a role in our everyday lives, what we eat, what we wear and how we act. Reading stories like "Tyranny Of Choice" and "Dead End" helped me to realize how important choice really is. Choice can effect our responsibilities, our future and even counter act with the lives of friends and family. It's as if we are controlled by choice, we are were we are today because of the little and big choices we've made, some depressing, some happy as ever.I know now that choice plays an important part in determining situations and understanding that importance will allow me to create a reality of happiness as I picture it.
